After 22 Years Behind the Camera, Michela Brown Photography Opens Downtown Abilene Studio

Michela Brown Photography’s new studio at 204 N. Spruce Street in downtown Abilene will welcome visitors for an October 1 open house from 5–7 p.m., with a ribbon cutting at 6 p.m.

In 2004, Michela Brown photographed her first wedding with two cameras—one loaded with color film, the other with black-and-white. Just two months after giving birth, she was pursuing a dream, beginning with friends’ weddings.

Twenty-two years later, that dream has a new address.

Michela Brown Photography has opened its first dedicated studio at 204 N. Spruce Street in downtown Abilene, expanding beyond the home-based business Brown has operated throughout her career. The community is invited to celebrate with an open house Thursday, October 1, from 5–7 p.m., with a ribbon cutting at 6 p.m.

Photography backdrops, lighting equipment and seating fill Brown’s new studio, creating a dedicated space for indoor sessions where she hopes clients will feel comfortable and at home.

A business built on lasting memories

Brown primarily photographs high school seniors, families and weddings, while welcoming clients with ideas for something different.

“If you bring an idea to me for a session, we will create it,” she said.

Over the years, she has developed her skills, built relationships with clients and formed friendships with fellow photographers. What stays with her most is the meaning her work holds for the people on the other side of the camera.

“I look back on the memories I have helped create for my clients and it makes me smile knowing the photos will be treasured for a lifetime,” Brown said.

Taking a leap downtown

After 22 years working from home without a dedicated place for indoor photography, Brown decided it was time to rent a studio.

She chose downtown Abilene for the visibility of a location people could discover while walking or driving by. The smaller space on North Spruce Street offered the right fit for her first studio.

Getting it ready involved cleaning, installing internet and webcams, adding shelves, purchasing furniture, and moving and organizing equipment and supplies from her home.

Now, Brown hopes the space will give clients a place to settle in and feel comfortable, whether they are visiting for a quick headshot or a more creative session.

The move also represents a new investment by an established local business in downtown Abilene: a dedicated commercial space, expanded possibilities for serving clients and opportunities to connect with neighboring businesses.

Brown is looking forward to collaborations such as the annual boutique crawl and a Halloween porch pop-up with Rackets Tap House, along with exploring other nearby connections.

“I'm very proud that I've made it this far in my photography career and I plan to keep going,” Brown said.
